In 2014, @michaelnicknichols worked on a special project with several photographers about #YellowstoneNationalPark. They explored the paradox of the park’s mission to protect wildlife and as a place for the “enjoyment of the people.” This photo shows a secluded area of the park, nicknamed “the bear bathtub”—a watering hole used by grizzly and black bears, but never at the same time. The photos and video Nichols and his team shot helped park scientists learn new information about bear behavior such as scent marking. See more of Nichols’s work in #MichaelNicholsWild, now through September 17. #AWildLife • “The Bear Bathtub (A Hidden Spring), Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming,” 2014, by Michael Nichols (Courtesy of the artist) © Michael Nichols/National Geographic
