Sarkis Katchadourian was an Armenian man who was born in Iran in 1886. In the 1930s he traveled around India copying ancient wall paintings he saw at various Buddhist and Hindu cave sanctuaries. Soon after, he exhibited his work at Calcutta University, where art historian and former curator Stella Kramrisch was a professor.
